The Page and Eloise Smith Scholarship Fund

Every dollar donated to the Page and Eloise Smith Scholarship goes to students in the form of annual scholarships to help finance their college education, to enhance their college experience, and/or to help with personal emergencies.

The Smith Society Operating Fund

We keep our operating expenses low, but we do need funds to cover modest expenses, such as refreshments for student gatherings and workshops, hospitality for pre-college youths to attend Smith Society sponsored on-campus events, food and transportation for our students who staff outreach events, and other incidental expenses. We also fund workstudy positions for our students to work at local nonprofit agencies that offer support services to those less fortunate in the Santa Cruz area. Our students gain valuable experience and skills while earning part of the cost to attend UC Santa Cruz and reducing their need to borrow more loans. Our local non-profit agencies benefit by receiving much needed help from college students. Our students are touching the lives of those less fortunate in the Santa Cruz area and are making a difference in their lives. And the federal government is contributing too by paying half of the wages our students earn through the Federal Workstudy Program.

The Page and Eloise Smith Scholarship Endowment

The Page and Eloise Smith Scholarship Endowment will provide scholarships for our future students. There are three primary ways to contribute to the endowment: 1) making a cash donation, 2) naming the endowment in your will, and/or 3) developing a long-term planned gift. For anyone holding an appreciated asset, the last can be a very helpful component of retirement planning. A planned gift is often in the form of a bequest from your will or trust, charitable remainder trust, charitable gift annuity, or a pooled income fund. A planned gift can also be funded from cash, greatly appreciated real estate, IRA, 401K, 403b, or a 457 retirement plan. When a planned gift is constructed properly, the donor can realize significant tax savings and an increase in income. Please let us know if you are interested in supporting us through a planned gift so that we can help you put together a plan that can maximize your income and tax savings. Your planned gift can leave a tremendous legacy and have a huge impact on our ability to help more students.
